Searching For Autumn

My horoscope today told me to go leaf hunting, bringing home colorful samples for the Samhain altar. It was a lovely thought, and I had that funny little urge to do just that. There was only one problem: all the leaves are still green.

Autumn has not come to NE Ohio. The week before last, the temperatures were in the high 80s (F). The September rains arrived at the end of last week, bringing the temperatures down about 10 degrees. This week has been primarily overcast and showery, with temperatures finally sinking into the high 60s. One branch at the back of my burning bush has a tinge of pink. Everything else on the street remains as green as summer green.

We took a ride into the Amish countryside today. The harvest decorations are up – lots of pumpkins, farm stands, scarecrows, etc. The fall flowers are lovely. This area is south of us, and here there were a few trees showing small bits of color among its branches. It was a hint – a very subtle hint – that autumn has arrived.

This is northeastern Ohio. We share a border with Canada which is covered by the waters of Lake Erie (the border, not the country). The September rains should have arrived a month ago, but we are getting them now. Peak leaf season should start next weekend, but it will be later this year. Still, we look for signs that autumn is on its way. It is an October game of hide-and-seek.

The seasons are off for the second year in a row, and this particular pagan is unhappy about it.
