Behold! A Dragon Appeared in the Yard!

The ride home from work tonight was lovely. The neighbors are finally decorating for the upcoming Samhain holiday. Pumpkins are everywhere, lining sidewalks, clustering around trees, gracing porches. Ghosts and witches peek out from trees, hide in graveyards, and fly in front of the rotating fan in a certain family’s laundry room. Pots of colorful chrysanthemums alternate with skeletons along the roadside. One house had its porch decorated with strands of tiny white lights, with pumpkins and corn stalks surrounding the porch pillars. The ride was enjoyable, and I savored every moment of it.

I was almost home. The wind had picked up slightly, tossing the branches of the trees that lined the road. The moon played hide-and-seek with the clouds. Suddenly, a gust parted the branches of two trees in the yard I was approaching, and…Behold! A dragon appeared in the yard!

What a magnificent dragon it was! Standing 6-7 feet tall, it reared up on its hind legs, using its tail to balance itself. Its head was thrown back, its mouth open, a roar and flames obviously about to erupt from its mouth. Its wings were outstretched, filling almost half of the yard. And, in true Samhain fashion, it was colored orange and black.

It was so dramatic, I almost forgave it for being plastic.

This is such a creative holiday. People let their imaginations run amok. Houses are decorated, costumes are worn, and party food is shaped in every possible way. Around here, the big cake competitions feature cupcakes pretending to be Jack-o-Lanterns, ghosts, and chocolate cat faces. Parties abound.

If you get a chance, take a ride around your neighborhood. Admire the pieces of Samhain art that you see. Allow yourself to be enchanted and then inspired. You never know what you may find.

You may even find a dragon in the yard.
