Preparing the Farm for Winter

My newer neighbor was preparing his garden for winter today. He had finished picking the vegetables and was working the soil. It is very pleasant to stand and talk with another outdoors loving person on a sunny 65 degree (F) day. It will be the last time for a while, for the rest of the month is supposed to be rainy and cold.

We talked about the aging trees. Some of the other trees in the neighborhood has been woodpecker restaurants for years now. The row of evergreens that is currently dividing our property are looking decidedly the worse for wear. There are hollow spots in the trunks, and many branches can no longer support needles. He is thinking of replacing them, but has not decided on what to replace them with.

We talked about his chickens. He told me of his problems with the neighborhood raccoon, who has a distinct taste for chicks. I shared with him the story of the raccoon who tried to break into the Temple to eat the kittens. He expressed his love and respect for nature, but agreed with me that raccoons do not belong in houses.

We talked about the tree that came down at the edge of his creek. He will not be able to get it all cut up before the weather turns. He does, however, need to get the branches out of the water before winter. I shared with him my stories about trees down in the creek and then offered to loan him my splitter.

All in all, it was a peaceful way to start the day.
