Enjoy the Day!

It was a beautiful day today. The sun shone upon us as we drove out to the countryside for the auctions. The leaves were past their peak, but there was still enough color to inspire comment. The town we were visiting is the home of the fourth largest Amish community in the country according to the local paper. Therefore, it was not long before we began to see the distinctive buggies pulled by some very happy and very beautiful horses.

It was a relaxed and happy day for many of us.

We stopped at the general store to purchase breakfast doughnuts – doughnuts literally as large as your head. The bakery counter in this store runs the entire width of the building. There are so many selections that one is overwhelmed. So, I focused on just one section of the counter and made my choice.

As the woman was wrapping my order, a man’s voice said behind me, “Have you ever tried the glazed doughnuts?”

I turned and answered, “No.”

“You must try one,” he said. “They are to die for.”

What a very Halloween-y comment, I thought. “But I need my chocolate in the morning,” I replied, plaintively.

He looked momentarily confused, but I heard an instant burst of laughter next to him. The next thing I knew, his wife was patting me on the shoulder. “I know what you mean,” she said. “I know exactly what you mean!”

Just that fast, three strangers shared a happy moment.  It was just enough to start the day.

We are so busy in our lives that we forget to savor them. One must slow down. It is the look of wonder directed at a lovely horse that elicits smiles from its driver. It is the sharing of a secret that creates a gentle bond. It is the warmth of laughter that starts a day with joy. It is the remaining color of the leaves that will linger in our minds.

Enjoy your day!
