Closer to Samhain (Day 28 of 31)

Samhain leaves

Inexorably, we are moving closer to Samhain. All of the home owners who decorate for the holiday – and there are many in the neighborhood – have done so. Folks are putting the finishing touches on their costumes, and the markets have dedicated large amounts of shelf space to candy.

The weather has finally cooperated, also. We had summer for far too long, which delayed the changing colors of the trees. We just finished a cold, rainy spell, however, and the landscape is beginning to look truly magnificent. Most of the leaves are still on the trees, but there will be enough on the ground for trick-or-treat to provide the appropriate scuttling sound for the walk.

The farmers are putting in their autumn work. The new neighbor is working on shelter for his livestock. The old neighbor is working on his stash of wood for the smoker. Hunting season starts next weekend, and soon the aroma of smoking meat will fill the neighborhood.

This week is supposed to be a good one, weather-wise. Most days are forecast to be partly cloudy, with only occasional showers on Thursday morning. Walking in a costume in the damp is better than walking in a thunderstorm or blizzard.

And so, we move closer to the beginning of a new year. We think of our ancestors and store food for the winter. We make lists. We put away the outdoor furniture and break out the snow shovels. The season of lights is upon us. Let us pause in our work to  appreciate each other.
