Herbs of Samhain – Pumpkins

Pumpkins are a new world vegetable. They have been cultivated in the Western Hemisphere for over 9,000 years. A member of the winter squash family, pumpkins store well for about a month.

Both the flesh and the seeds of the pumpkin are edible. Obviously high in beta carotene, pumpkins are also high in fiber. The flesh provides potassium and vitamin C. The seeds also provide protein and iron, as well as vitamins B and E.

Pumpkins are an ideal decoration for Samhain. They are harvested in October and last through the Samhain season. Their orange color stands out, even against the changing colors of leaves. They are also ideal for lanterns, although rather too large for hand lanterns. Although many round vegetables have been used for lanterns, turnips and pumpkins seem to be the most popular choices.

Pumpkin decorating is a popular past time for children. They can be carved or painted. Contests are held in many communities, which stimulates the creative urges of adults as well as children. Some are adorable, and some are terrifying. However you decorate your pumpkin, have fun. It is one of the joys of the Samhain season.
